Who Is God

Who is God

One of the foremost commands ever given, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might” (Deuteronomy 6:5). How can we love God if we don’t know Him?  Who is God, and how do we find out? “For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:10-11). God, by His Spirit, reveals Himself to us through His word. If we want to have a good understanding of who God is, we must open our Bibles.

Moses asks God Himself, how the Israelites will know who sent him to them. “God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM"; and He said, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you'” (Exodus 3:14). God is. He is eternal. This is reflected again in Revelations "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8). There is no beginning and no end of God, He just is.

God is the almighty, the creator of everything  in this universe. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being” (John 1:1-3). In the beginning, God speaks and the entirety of the world is created–the visible and the invisible. “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:16-17).

God is love. “We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (1 John 4:16). “The LORD appeared to him from afar, saying, "I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness” (Jeremiah 31:3). God is eternal and His love is everlasting. God made us because of and for love. Simply stated the Bible can be summarized as “LOVE. “For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, "You shall LOVE your neighbor as yourself”(Galatians 5:14).

God’s love gives us a chance at eternal life. “By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:9-10). Mankind constantly betrays God, yet He loves us enough to give us a chance. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

God reveals Himself to us through His word, His eternalness, His almightiness, and His love. If we want to find God we only have to look. “'You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart’” (Jeremiah 29:13).
